Hyper Island - School

The Hyper Island Way from jonny von wallström on Vimeo.

Hyper Island started in 1995 when Jonathan Briggs, David Erixon and Lars Lundh met during a project involving a CD-rom production. They soon realized the increasing need of a different kind of education involving industry based learning, for the growing new media industry. The first long term program at Hyper Island started in Karlskrona 1996 with 32 students.

Since the start in 1996, the methodology of Hyper Island has been a true success. Today, Hyper Island runs the long term programs Digital Media (in Stockholm and Karlskrona), Interactive Art Director (Stockholm) and Motion Graphics Designer (Karlskrona). In total over 260 students study full time at Hyper Island each year.

C O D E O R G A N

Cube Interfaces

Cube Browser

CubeBrowser is the concept study for a six display cube with digital screens that makes it possible to browse online databases like Flickr.com. The control of navigation is exclusively accomplished by performing manual actions on the object, which creates a playful way of discovering image collections that are networked by tags. Ludwig Zeller is developing this project as his diploma thesis in audiovisual media at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. Originally, the project has been started within a research cooperation between Prof. Frans Vogelaar and the design department of Yahoo!. The diploma project is advised by Prof. Zilvinas Lilas, Prof. Dr. Georg Trogemann and Lasse Scherffig.

Better User Experience With Storytelling, Part 2 - Smashing Magazine

In the first part of this Better User Experience With Storytelling series, we explored some of the basic structures and story patterns found in myths and religions. We saw how these patterns continued into modern stories such as The Matrix and Star Wars. We also explored some of the basics of bringing storytelling into the user experience process and some places to get started.

Topics:
- A Few Modern-Day Storytellers
- The Storytelling Experiences Around Us
- The End Is The Beginning Of This Story

Transmediale: Bruce Sterling (us) on Atemporality | transmediale

If progress is to go beyond the banal indulgences that give rise to a never-ending array of car shell designs then we need to analyse our present time with regard to its aesthetics and its media. The second conference session is being introduced with Bruce Sterling's Keynote on Atemporality.

Review on ixda interaction 2010

ack from interaction10, the annual conference hosted by the Interaction Design Association (IxDA) in Savannah, Georgia. A good occasion to visit the deep south (aka “dirty south 2) that I did not know at all. More observation on this at the end of this post, let’s focus first in lessons learned at the conference.

Track Mouse Activity On Your Computer

"Anatoly Zenkov provides this nifty tool (Mac and PC) to track your mouse pointer. Really simple. Just start it, let it run, minimize the window, and carry on as usual. In the end, you get this image that looks something like a Pollock. Circles show areas where the pointer didn't move while the tracks show movement."

Usability and User Experiences

The rapid growth of RIA technology into the lives of every day people just a few years ago has carried both the usability and user experience industries to a new high in popularity. The success of software (particularly on the web) has driven both of these terms into our vernacular, and yet they are still often confused or thought to be synonymous. This post is meant to help those new to the field or unfamiliar with the intricacies of design to understand the differences between the terms.
