Google Scholar

1. Google scholar is a reliable search tool to browse/access [some of] the academic literature. Is it the best free tool we have? Well, it's really the only general free tool for academic literature that we have, in an easy-to-use familiar interface.

2. Between regular (or Mother) Google and Google scholar, all websites, journal publishers crawled and made searchable - endusers can search about 100,000,000,000 items (yes, billion) discreet files, pages and journal articles. (On the academic side only, I'd guess that Google scholar searches around 500 million items).

3. Google scholar is a handy tool to locate [some of] the open-access and grey literature. However, its American-bias is unfortunate, and its quality controls need improvement. (This is where librarians need to focus their efforts in teaching.)

4. Google scholar provides access to unique content not in other search tools. (Unfortunately, searchers are advised to try both Google & Google scholar because there is unique academic content in both.)

5. Google scholar is still free and openly-accessible. It is now a part of the academic librarian's toolbox (but requires contextualization for end-users to understand its limitations.)

11 Ways To Lose Laptop Backaches -

Forbes' neat little photo essay, "11 Ways To Lose Laptop Backaches -
Forbes.com
," includes the obvious (the MacBook Air, the iPhone) but goes on to look at some Hmm, how about those? options: the Fujitsu Lifebook, the iGo Stowaway Keyboard, the Samsung Q1 tablet, and others. A good, quick look at some alternate form factors for mobile computing.

We Feel Fine

"Since August 2005, We Feel Fine has been harvesting human feelings from a large number of weblogs. Every few minutes, the system searches the world's newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases 'I feel' and 'I am feeling'. When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the 'feeling' expressed in that sentence (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.). Because blogs are structured in largely standard ways, the age, gender, and geographical location of the author can often be extracted and saved along with the sentence, as can the local weather conditions at the time the sentence was written. All of this information is saved."

The interface to this data is a self-organizing particle system, where each particle represents a single feeling posted by a single individual. The particles' properties – color, size, shape, opacity – indicate the nature of the feeling inside, and any particle can be clicked to reveal the full sentence or photograph it contains. The particles careen wildly around the screen until asked to self-organize along any number of axes, expressing various pictures of human emotion. We Feel Fine paints these pictures in six formal movements titled: Madness, Murmurs, Montage, Mobs, Metrics, and Mounds.

Fitbit - Automatically Track Your Fitness and Sleep

Essentially a very smart 3D pedometer, the Fitbit clips unobtrusively onto your jeans or bra strap during the day and figures out how far you've gone and how many calories you've burned. The $99 price tag, though, is justified by some serious added functionality. Taking cues from the Wii and the Nike+ iPod system, Fitbit has enough logic to distinguish between walking, running and riding in a car, and syncs the daily results with the user's computer, posting them to a socially networked website. Moreover, it analyzes sleep patterns when worn at night by detecting REM-induced tremors.

Google: Introducing Mobile Search with My Location

Official Google Mobile Blog: Introducing Mobile Search with My Location: "From time to time, we all need information about local businesses when we're away from our computers -- like confirming the address of a bar while on the way to meet friends. Today we're introducing Search with My Location, a new way to make searching for nearby businesses on your Windows Mobile phone faster and easier.

Previously, when you went to google.com from your phone’s browser and performed a local search, the results were tailored to the last location you entered. Now, using the Gears Geolocation API, Search with My Location approximates your actual location using the same Cell ID technology used by Google maps for mobile. So if you want to find sushi nearby, just type 'sushi' and Google will return local business listings around you. If you want to know the forecast, type 'weather'. If you want to search somewhere else, specify a location in the query like 'pizza Kansas City'."

Alcatel-Lucent announced the launch by its Alcatel-Lucent Ventures program of tikitagsm, a consumer service, at the DEMOfall 08 conference in San Diego. tikitag enables consumers and third-party application developers to increase the value of everyday items by connecting them to online content or applications.

The technology that tikitag takes advantage of to establish this connection is Near Field Communications Technology (NFC) - an evolution of RFID that connects electronic devices over short distances. The market for NFC is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Market consultancy Strategy Analytics projects that by 2012 around 250 million NFC-enabled phones will be sold worldwide. URLs will be an Anachronism

After playing with Google’s Chrome browser for the last few days, I noticed the “Address” bar, which is just called a “Omnibox” (corrected from just “box” via comments) is really a search field. Anything entered into it will deliver a webpage (it first looks at your historical activities) or renders Google search results (or search of your preference, including twitter search). As a result, it’s become apparently that I no longer need to enter in URLs to my browser for 99% of all tasks.

Google Chrome for Android

Google co-founder expects Chrome for Android | Business Tech - CNET News

Google's new Chrome browser is for PCs today, but company co-founder Sergey Brin expects the technology will make its way to Android, the company's mobile phone operating system and software suite.
Chrome and Android were developed largely separately, Brin said in an interview at the Chrome launch event Tuesday. 'We have not wanted to bind one's hands to the other's,' Brin said. But you can expect that to change now that both projects are public and nearing their first final releases.

'Probably a subsequent version of Android is going to pick up a lot of the Chrome stack,' Brin said, pointing to JavaScript improvements as one area.

And the brand name likely will follow. 'My guess is we'll have 'Chrome-like' or something similar,' he said.
Chrome and Android's current browser both already employ WebKit, an open-source project for the process of interpreting the HTML code that makes up a Web page and rendering it on a screen."

IPTV Explained

IPTV, essentially, has two components:

Part 1:
Internet Protocol (IP): specifies the format of packets and the addressing scheme for a network. Most networks combine IP with a higher-level protocol.

Depending on the vendor solution, user datagram protocol (UDP) is the most typical higher-level protocol. The protocol establishes a virtual connection between a destination and a source. IP allows you to address a package of information and drop it in the system, but there's no direct link between you and the recipient.

Part 2:
Television (TV): specifies the medium of communication that operates through the transmission of pictures and sounds. We all know TV, but here we are referring to the services that are offered for the TV, like linear and on-demand programming.
