Why Design Education Must Change
Traditionally what designers lack in knowledge, they make up for in craft skills. Whether it be sketching, modeling, detailing or rendering, designers take an inordinate amount of pride in honing key techniques over many years. Unfortunately many of these very skills have limited use in the new design domains. (Core 77 columnist Kevin McCullagh.)

The Problem With Home Button
If you sit and watch people use an iPhone there’s a mistake made often and reliably: They hit the home button when they mean to just go back to the app’s main screen. Going home has heavy consequences—to recover you’ve got to find that app again, sit through its splash screen, and fiddle the app to where it was before. The home button is the grunt-and-touch control of physical affordances. While iconically simple, the one bit of information it lets you indicate is too little.

The Interaction Design of a Sugar Dispenser
...If this was a sugar bowl, it would require the use of a spoon in order to dispense the sugar. This means many people would be unable to fight the common human faux pax of taking the 1st serving with a dry spoon and their second or third with a wet spoon. Even when a dedicated spoon is offered for such a bowl, it is either ignored or used outright, made wet...

Flight Pattern
We've all seen Aaron Koblin's Flight Patterns, so we know that there's a certain rhythm to air traffic. GE, who has an aviation branch that designs engines, takes a more local approach to showing air traffic over the course of a day. I'm not sure how to describe it other than multi-stream video, or something like that. Just watch the video below.

Essential Interaction Design Essays and Articles
I’ve started a list of essays and articles that I feel are important touchstones and reference points for interaction designers. These are not books (my Top Ten Essential Interaction Design Books), book chapters, or presentations (list to come), and I’ve certainly left out some classic (and not-yet-classic) articles. The list, as the best lists often are, is idiosyncratic. But please offer your own suggestions for additions in the comments.
