Why Design Education Must Change
Traditionally what designers lack in knowledge, they make up for in craft skills. Whether it be sketching, modeling, detailing or rendering, designers take an inordinate amount of pride in honing key techniques over many years. Unfortunately many of these very skills have limited use in the new design domains. (Core 77 columnist Kevin McCullagh.)

The Problem With Home Button
If you sit and watch people use an iPhone there’s a mistake made often and reliably: They hit the home button when they mean to just go back to the app’s main screen. Going home has heavy consequences—to recover you’ve got to find that app again, sit through its splash screen, and fiddle the app to where it was before. The home button is the grunt-and-touch control of physical affordances. While iconically simple, the one bit of information it lets you indicate is too little.

The Interaction Design of a Sugar Dispenser
...If this was a sugar bowl, it would require the use of a spoon in order to dispense the sugar. This means many people would be unable to fight the common human faux pax of taking the 1st serving with a dry spoon and their second or third with a wet spoon. Even when a dedicated spoon is offered for such a bowl, it is either ignored or used outright, made wet...

Flight Pattern
We've all seen Aaron Koblin's Flight Patterns, so we know that there's a certain rhythm to air traffic. GE, who has an aviation branch that designs engines, takes a more local approach to showing air traffic over the course of a day. I'm not sure how to describe it other than multi-stream video, or something like that. Just watch the video below.

Essential Interaction Design Essays and Articles
I’ve started a list of essays and articles that I feel are important touchstones and reference points for interaction designers. These are not books (my Top Ten Essential Interaction Design Books), book chapters, or presentations (list to come), and I’ve certainly left out some classic (and not-yet-classic) articles. The list, as the best lists often are, is idiosyncratic. But please offer your own suggestions for additions in the comments.

Between Reality and Impossible
Critical design duo Dunne and Raby have made their contribution to the show in St Etienne this year by displaying some of their most recent "design fictions"; a collection of arresting design proposals that transport the mind to an alternate, perhaps future, world in which products and technology are used very differently.

Dead Drops
‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. USB flash drives are ‘injected’ into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody in public space. Everyone is invited to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your favorite files and data. Each dead drop is installed empty except a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is open to participation. If you want to install a dead drop in your city/neighborhood follow the ‘how to’ instructions and submit the location and pictures.

Shades of Grey: Wireframes as Thinking Device
My good friend Russ Unger recently published a book for Peachpit entitled A Project Guide to UX Design, and he asked me to contribute some designs for his chapter on wireframing, which I was pleased to do. He provided me with some background information and requirements for the redesign of a fictitious cruise line operator homepage, and asked that I design some annotated wireframes that he could use as examples in his book.

Designing for iPad: Reality Check
Over the last two months we have been working on several iPad projects: Two news applications, a social network and a word processor. We worked on iPad projects without ever having touched an iPad. One client asked us to “start working on that tablet thing” even before we knew whether the iPad was real. The question Are we designing desktop programs, web sites or something entirely new? has been torturing us until that express package from New York finally crossed our door sill. A quick write up of design insights before and after the appearance of the iPad at our office.

Adobes CS5 Giveaway via Gowalla
Starting today, April 1st, and continuing every day up to April 12th, we have decided to give away a copy of Creative Suite 5 to one lucky (and quick) individual. We have chosen our friends at Gowalla to help us with this. Here’s how it works - at some random point during the morning, we will start to hint where the copy will be placed. At noon that day, a copy of CS5 will be “placed” in a top secret location. If you have guessed right, you will be at that location and will check in via Gowalla to see the item, if its not already claimed by a quicker clicker, its yours.
The first person to log into Gowalla after the item is dropped, will be notified that they have “found a virtual copy of Creative Suite 5″ that can be redeemed for a real version by adding the item to their Gowalla collection. The winner will get to choose whether they want Design, Web or Production Premium. See the Terms and Conditions here.

Data Sculpture
My work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines, I translate scientific data related to astronomy, ecology and meteorology woven sculptures. My method of translation is principally that of weaving – in particular basket weaving – as it provides me with a simple yet highly effective grid through which to interpret data in three-dimensional space. By staying true to the numbers, these woven pieces tread an uneasy divide between functioning both as sculptures in space as well as instruments that could be used in the actual environment from which the data originates.

Service Design: Key Methods and Strategies
Over the last few decades, the economy has shifted dramatically from products to services. More-informed, demanding, and time-scarce consumers are looking for companies that can help make their lives easier, more productive, and more enjoyable. The decisions we make, the brands we are loyal to, the way we spend our time and money are mostly based on the services we receive. As a result, even traditional product-based companies are now offering a broad spectrum of value-added services.

Pattern Tap
Pattern Tap was born out of our love for the best interface designs on the web. We wanted a place where we could come and easily find the stuff we were looking for. Sometimes it was a matter of some inspiration for pulling off a horizontal nav bar with a ton of sections, sometimes it was just trying to visually separate some content. We didn't find any central place to find all this stuff, so we made our own.

7 User Experience Lessons from the iPhone (Introducing UX)
View more presentations from Stephen Anderson.
"A story, about a new, not-yet-released, product. The iPhone."
Not the iPhone 4, the iPhone 1!
The seven user experience lessons were and are:
- Place better 'experiences' ahead of more features.
- Start with actual experiences.
- Solve the real problems.
- Play to think.
- Treat interfaces like conversations.
- Lead with a vision.
- Obsess on the details.
To repeat it: "It's not about more features. Place better 'experiences' ahead of more features.

"The latest 1 Hour Design Challenge: Gestural Interfaces was produced in partnership with Teague. Together, we challenged designers to think off the screen and make interfaces that live in the the objects and geometry of the world around us. In developing meaningful counterpoints to the flatness of all-in-one interfaces, we hoped you would integrate the richness of the physical world with the endless possibilities of digital information, tying together interface, ritual and context."
